Wood County Historical Society For over fifty years, many dedicated residents of the County interested in preserving the history of the area have served as members of the Society. The County owes all these people its deepest gratitude for preserving the historical resources and for researching and obtaining the many State historical markers found throughout the County, ensuring that these events, people, or buildings will not be forgotten. E. A. Spacek, a Quitman resident, served as the first President of the Society. Mrs. George Lemon was second president and others who have served are Mrs. Bob Douglas, Virgil B. Shaw, Jerry A. Edwards, Bill Jones and Mrs. Eugene Mallory. While serving as Chairman, Ed Spacek worked with Miss Ima Hogg, who was born in Mineola, in the restoration of the James A. Stinson House, the home of Miss Hogg’s grandparents, and the Honeymoon Cottage at the Gov. Hogg Shrine State Park in Quitman. While Mr. Shaw was Chairman the Society researched the history of the County and in 1976 published “Wood County 1850-1900”. This is a most comprehensive history of the County and has been of great benefit for historians. This book is still available for sale. The Society is composed of residents from all areas of the County who, in their own community, work to preserve and maintain their historic resources. It has been through their efforts that each area has been able to retain its historical integrity. We hope you enjoy your visit to our site and will visit historic Wood County soon!
