Golden, named for John G. Golden, a railway construction engineer, originated when C. W. Tucker built a saw mill near the site in the late 1870s.  It became a village when the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad built a line from Greenville to Mineola in 1882.

Primarily a farming area, railroad tie-cutting played a part in its economy.

Today, yearly the citizens in this community hold their annual Sweet Potato Festival in the fall, sweet potatoes having become their best selling crop.
