Hainesville's first family, known to have settled in the vicinity, was Joseph and Martha Varner Moody who built a log cabin less than 2 miles southeast of the site in 1845.  By the 1860s there were several families in the area.  The first post office was established in 1892 under the name of DuPree, an early doctor in the area.  In 1893 the post office was named Hainesville for C. H. Haines, a prominent early settler.  Mr. Haines married Martin’s Varner’s youngest daughter.  Martin Varner, the area’s first white settler arrived in 1841 and settled on a land grant east of Lake Fork Creek.

About 30 years ago, oil was discovered in the Hainesville area and revitalized this small but very important area of the county.  Many descendents of the early settlers still reside in the community.
