Hawkins was settled in 1873 when the Texas and Pacific Railroad was built through the County in 1872.  It is said to be named for one of the survey crews for the railroad who carved his name on a pine tree.  Long before the coming of the railroad a number of families lived in the area as it was the main thoroughfare leading to Belzora Crossing on the Sabine River.  Belzora was a river port as well as stagecoach crossing until the coming of the railroad.

During the oil boom of the 1940s, oil was discovered and for many years Humble, later Exxon, had a camp here.  Today, drilling activity continues in the area. The citizens celebrate this with their annual Oil Festival every October.

It also is the home of Jarvis College, primarily a black college.
