Winnsboro  was first settled in 1854 by W. R. McMillan and his stepson, John E. Winn.  The two men were migrating from Rusk County and camped at the intersection of the Quitman and Mt. Pleasant Road and were impressed with the beauty of the area and decided to remain.  The two men purchased 361 acres and began building houses for themselves as well as a storeroom.

When the first post office was established the town’s official name was Winnsborough but was changed in 1893 to Winnsboro when a new postmaster was appointed.

Two communities nearby, Cornersville and Webster, with the coming of the railroad in 1878, began to lose their residents who began to move to Winnsboro.  In Webster, one business house, Golden and Ferguson, moved their business to Winnsboro.
